Thank you

Next week, on November 11, most children and some adults will enjoy a vacation day. Americans will be celebrating Veterans Day which originated as “Armistice Day” on November 11, 1919 as the first anniversary of the end of World War I.   Freeburg Pianos will be open and honoring our veterans with a FREE CONCERT in our Master Works Theatre. The nostalgic program entitled “Musical Memories – Songs of WWI and WWII” will begin at 4:00.

The idea for the event was birthed last spring when I spent two months caring for my ailing Dad in Minnesota.  He’s a veteran and although I knew he wouldn’t be able to attend, I wanted to put together a musical program that would honor his sacrifice as well as bring back good memories.  Thanks to technology and a very talented team, I will be able to send Dad the video.

Music has always been an important part of war times.  Music rallied the troops, comforted the lonely and heart-broken, inspired patriotism and celebrated victory. Several local professional musicians have donated their time to present heart- warming and inspiring music from the WWI and WWII years.

I can hardly wait for the first glorious notes as Hendersonville Symphony Orchestra trumpeter Peter Voisin opens the program with “The Star-Spangled Banner.”  Well-known pianist and organist Howard Bakken will accompany members of the Carolina Concert Choir, Cherie Barget and David Vandre, as they sing several selections from WWI.  Mr. Bakken will have some of his collection of WWI sheet music on display.  Jazz singer Elise Pratt, accompanied by Aaron Coffin, will sing a medley of love songs from WWII.  “We’ll be toe-tapping and smiling from ear to ear with these familiar tunes.”

Music has an amazing power to stir my emotions.  Happy or sad, certain songs still “choke me up” so you can count on tissues being available. And, since I know I can’t help but sing along on the patriotic songs, we’re welcoming everyone to join in.

If you are in our area, I hope you will join us for a meaningful and fun concert in honor of those who have served our country in the Armed Forces. If you are a long-distance reader, please join your hearts with ours and sing, hum or whistle a patriotic melody of gratitude for our veterans and the land we love.
