Playing Piano – “Does a Body Good”

At Freeburg Pianos, it’s our privilege and delight to connect people and pianos. This summer, today’s guest blog writer was inspired at one of our concerts to return to the joy of playing piano. One Tuesday while I was there, she came into our showroom and purchased a piano to begin the adventure. I think you will enjoy reading her blog about her experience taking lessons as an adult.

Playing Piano and Neuroplasticity

The concept of neuroplasticity was first introduced to me by Ageless Grace® creator Denise Medved. In my training as an Ageless Grace® Educator, [Joann is also an AG Educator] I learned how the brain and nervous system can quickly change and adapt through targeted movements which reopen neural pathways established during infancy and early childhood. I have had the opportunity very recently to experience the neuroplasticity process in my return to piano studies after more than 40 years away from the instrument.

IMG_1262I studied piano and took lessons from first grade all the way through high school. Then, I left for college and left the piano behind me. My piano was quickly passed down to my nieces for their own music lessons. Through the years, I’ve thought about returning to the instrument but life, parenting, career demands, etc., etc., got in the way. Those piano-playing thoughts have occurred more recently over the past year and in mid-June, on impulse, I visited Freeburg Pianos where I found and purchased the perfect piano for my needs and budget.

Upon delivery of my piano one week later, I resumed the piano studies I had abandoned over 40 years ago, this time with Freeburg Pianos’ resident expert piano teacher and professional classical concert pianist, Dr. John Cobb. Now, just six weeks later, I am amazed at my progress! I had anticipated needing at least one year to regain the level of skill I had reached by age 17. I think I’m almost there now! This is neuroplasticity in action, folks. It is amazing what the mind-body remembers. I have practiced diligently over the past weeks and now I’m reaching the point where new learning is happening, where new neural pathways are being established. Hopefully, beautiful piano-playing will result one day from my efforts. For now, I absolutely love the process!
