Happy 4th of July!

This is the 40th year of the “Boston Pops 4th of July Fireworks Spectacular.” I first found out about the event from my parents who, after they no longer attended their little town of Spicer’s fireworks show, stayed home and enjoyed the televised event. In the comfort of their own living room, they escaped the high, humid heat, monstrous mosquitoes and slow-moving, post- parade traffic.

Every year the Boston Pops Orchestra, along with their guest performers, provides inspirational patriotic music and a spectacular fireworks display. This year is no exception. Here is just one interesting paragraph from their blog on www.july4th.org. “This year’s Spectacular keeps alive several of the Boston holiday traditions including the Pop’s now classic Independence Day rendition of Tchaikovsky’s “1812 Overture,” which features real cannons, the live ringing of church bells and fireworks. The concert will conclude with “The Stars and Stripes Forever” which includes the ceremonial American flag drop and confetti shot. The Spectacular will be capped off by a magnificent fireworks array that fills the skies above Boston with a stunning exhibition of color and breathtaking pageantry.”

Doesn’t that sound wonderful?!?!? Don’t you wish you could be there? Well, going to Boston is the only way you and I are going to experience the event this year. According to an article in the Boston Globe, the program will not be televised except by local a television station. After twenty years, a show in NYC is taking its place. It better be good.

I will miss the Boston Pops celebration but whatever fireworks and patriotic music I experience will bring tears to my eyes. It always does. I am thankful to be an American.
